Counterintuitive Strategic Decisions
Chess is not easy, and like in many other areas, we develop rules and heuristics to make difficult decisions easier. Knowing these rules, and knowing how to apply them, is an important part of becoming a decent chess player. But as we gain more knowledge and experience, we also come across more and more situations where breaking a rule can actually be the right thing to do. This means that sometimes we have to consider ideas that go against the intuition we have built up over years of playing chess. The more we understand both the rules and the exceptions to them, the deeper our understanding of the game becomes, and the more we can appreciate its beauty.
Luke Lau explains how these counterintuitive decisions make chess so fascinating, regardless of one’s playing level. They challenge what we think we know, while at the same time adding to our knowledge and enjoyment of the game.
